My Take

My husband and I have both held the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card since 2020 — and the reason we've kept it this long comes down to two things: the annual free night certificate and the automatic Gold Elite status.

Every year after your card anniversary you receive a free night certificate worth up to 35,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. For many travelers that certificate alone covers the $125 annual fee — and then some. We've used ours for stays that would have cost $200-$300 per night, which makes the math pretty simple. And with the ability to add up to 25,000 additional Bonvoy points to the certificate, you can potentially book rooms up to 60,000 points per night, which opens up a really nice range of properties.

The automatic Marriott Bonvoy® Gold Elite status is another benefit I genuinely appreciate. You're not going to get upgraded to a suite, but the 25% bonus points on paid stays, late checkout when available, and potential room upgrades at check-in add up over time — especially for families who stay at Marriott properties regularly.

I recommend this card most enthusiastically when the welcome offer includes free night certificates (ie. "Up to five free night certificates").

One thing to keep in mind: Marriott free night certificates expire 12 months from the date they are issued, so make sure you have a plan for how you'll use them before applying.

Offer History

The standard welcome offer on the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card typically sits around 3 free night awards, although we have seen several different variations of this.

If you're considering this card I'd recommend applying during a free night certificate promotion rather than a points-based offer. The free nights tend to deliver more tangible value for most travelers.
