My Take

My husband held the Business Platinum Card® from American Express for two years and we got real value out of it — but I'll be honest, it took real effort too.

When we first had it we were able to make the math work by staying on top of the statement credits. But when the annual fee increased to $895, we made the decision to take a break. The card wasn't the problem — the mental energy of keeping up with every credit was. When you're a busy family running a business, tracking credits across a dozen different categories eventually becomes its own part-time job.

That said, for the right business owner this card is genuinely exceptional. The lounge access alone is worth hundreds of dollars if you're a frequent solo traveler — with access to more than 1,550 airport lounges across 140 countries through the American Express Global Lounge Collection®, including Centurion Lounges and 10 complimentary Delta Sky Club® visits per year when flying on an eligible Delta flight. The up to $200 airline fee statement credit, up to $200 Hilton statement credit, and up to $600 hotel statement credit through Fine Hotels + Resorts® or The Hotel Collection are all highly usable if travel is a regular part of your business life.

The earning structure is also worth noting — you'll earn 2x Membership Rewards® points at U.S. construction material and hardware suppliers, electronic goods retailers, software and cloud system providers, and shipping providers, as well as on each eligible purchase of $5,000 or more up to $2 million of these purchases per calendar year. For businesses with significant spending in those categories this card can generate points quickly.

The spending limit on the Business Platinum Card® is flexible — unlike a traditional card with a set limit, the amount you can spend adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment, and credit history.

Note: The Business Platinum Card® from American Express allows you to carry a balance with interest for certain charges, but not all.

One thing worth noting: like all Amex business cards, this one doesn't count toward your 5/24 status, and you can open it regardless of where you are in your personal Amex card journey.
