My Take

Before Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines merged their loyalty programs into what is now called Atmos Rewards, I held the predecessor to this card — the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® — from January 2025 through March 2025. I closed it after the first year because, while I highly value atmos miles, we rarely fly on Alaska or Hawaiian Airlines making the free baggage perk essentially useless. That said, I do not regret opening it one bit for the welcome offer.

Those miles — now called Atmos Rewards points — are some of the most valuable airline miles I have ever worked with. We used them to book our Japan Airlines flights home from Japan to JFK, fly interisland in Hawaii, and cover domestic American Airlines flights from Pennsylvania to Florida. The pricing on oneworld alliance partnership flights is genuinely what sets this program apart. You are not locked into flying Alaska or Hawaiian to get value — you can book American Airlines, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, and more.

The Ascent is the entry point into the Atmos Rewards card family, and it is a strong one for a $95 annual fee. The annual $99 Companion Fare alone can offset the fee in a single trip if you fly with a partner or family member on an Alaska or Hawaiian Airlines flight. Free checked bags for up to six guests on the same reservation is a benefit that adds up fast for families — on a round trip that is $90 in savings per person, per trip.

Before applying, keep in mind that Bank of America typically limits approvals to no more than 2 of their credit cards in 2 months, 3 in 12 months, and 4 in 24 months. There is also a rule based on how many new cards you have opened across all banks in the past 12 months — if you have a Bank of America deposit account, that limit is 7 new cards in 12 months, but if you do not have a deposit account with them, the limit drops to just 3 new cards in 12 months. If you are close to that lower threshold, it may be worth opening a Bank of America checking or savings account first.

If you are loyal to Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines, or if you are interested in booking award flights across the oneworld alliance, this card deserves a serious look.
