My Take
The Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card sits right in the middle of the Delta personal credit card lineup, and I think that's exactly where it earns its keep. You get a real Companion Certificate every year after renewal, which alone can offset a big chunk of the annual fee if you travel with a partner even once. Add MQD Headstart, which hands you $2,500 toward Medallion status the moment you're approved, and this card does real work toward status without asking you to fly constantly.
The credits stack up fast too. Between the Rideshare Credit, the Resy Credit, and the Delta Stays Credit, you're looking at meaningful annual value if those categories already show up in your spending, on top of free checked bags on every Delta flight.
One thing worth knowing: this card doesn't include Delta Sky Club or Centurion Lounge access. If lounge access matters to your family's travel, that's what separates the Platinum from the Reserve, and it's worth stepping up for if you fly often enough to use it. Also worth flagging: like other personal Amex cards, this one counts toward Chase's 5/24 rule, so keep that in mind if you're also building a Chase card stack.
