My Take
The Hilton Honors American Express Card is one I recommend with a specific caveat: only apply when the free night certificate is part of the welcome offer. Without it, the offer loses a lot of its punch. When the free night is included, it's a different story entirely. Those free night certificates can be used on any standard award night at any Hilton property, even the really bougie ones!
Here's why I love this card for families: Hilton Honors points can be incredibly valuable for hotel stays, and with no annual fee, there's very little risk in holding it long term. But the real play for families is applying strategically. If you and your spouse each apply during a free night certificate promo, you're walking away with two free hotel nights — which for a family that needs two rooms anyway, is an incredible value.
A couple of important things to know going in: if you happen to earn a free night certificate, those expire after 12 months, so you need to have a plan for how you'll use them before you apply. Don't let them sit in your account and forget about them. Also, Hilton Honors points expire if your account is inactive for 24 months, so make sure you're using the card occasionally to keep your balance alive.
With 7x Hilton Honors Bonus Points at Hilton hotels and resorts, 5x at U.S. restaurants, U.S. supermarkets, and U.S. gas stations, and no annual fee, this card earns well on everyday spending and costs you nothing to keep. It's a solid addition to any travel wallet during the right promo offer.
