My Take
I don't personally hold the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card, but it's one I recommend enthusiastically — especially when the welcome offer includes a free night certificate in the welcome offer.
Here's what makes this card compelling: Hilton Honors points can be incredibly valuable for aspirational stays, and 130,000 bonus points is a significant amount to start with. Add a free night certificate on top of that and you're looking at a welcome offer that could easily fund a memorable hotel stay — or two.
The $200 annual Hilton statement credit ($50 per quarter) goes a long way toward offsetting the $150 annual fee, making the card nearly free to hold if you're already spending at Hilton properties. And the automatic Gold Elite status gives you a meaningful set of perks — bonus points on paid stays, room upgrade requests, and complimentary breakfast at select properties.
For anyone with an aspirational Hilton stay on their bucket list — a resort in the Maldives, a beachfront property in Hawaii, or a luxury city hotel — the Surpass is a smart card to hold. The earning rates are strong, the status perks are genuinely useful, and the free night certificate after $15,000 in annual spend gives you an ongoing reason to keep it in your wallet year after year.
One thing to note: like all Hilton points, yours will expire if your account is inactive for 24 months. Make sure you're using the card occasionally to keep your balance alive.

Offer History
Standard offers on the Surpass typically sit around 130,000 points without the free night certificate. As with the base Hilton Honors card, I recommend waiting for a free night certificate promotion before applying — the additional certificate significantly increases the value of the welcome offer.
