My Take
The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card is the premium option in the Marriott Amex lineup, and at $650 a year it needs to earn its keep. For the right traveler — one who stays at Marriott properties regularly, eats at restaurants often, and travels through airports enough to use lounge access — it does.
Start with the annual Free Night Award. Unlike the Bevy’s spend-threshold certificate, the Brilliant gives you a free night automatically every year after your card renewal — no spending requirement, no conditions. The award is valid at properties up to 85,000 points per night, and you can add up to 25,000 of your own points on top to reach properties valued at up to 110,000 points. That means a Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis redemption is within reach for the right destination. Used well, this certificate alone can be worth $400–$600 or more — nearly offsetting the entire annual fee in a single stay.
Then there is the $300 annual dining statement credit, issued as $25 per month for eligible restaurant purchases worldwide. This credit is one of the most straightforward in the premium card space — use your card at any restaurant and the credit applies automatically. That brings the effective annual fee down to $350 before you even factor in the free night.
The complimentary Platinum Elite status is where the card really separates itself from mid-tier alternatives. Platinum Elite is the level most Marriott loyalists aspire to — it unlocks lounge access at properties that have lounges, complimentary breakfast at select brands, room upgrades, and a 50% bonus on eligible hotel purchases. Getting Platinum Elite status handed to you without earning 50 qualifying nights is a significant benefit.
Add Priority Pass Select for unlimited airport lounge visits, the Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit, and up to $100 in property credits at The Ritz-Carlton® and St. Regis® properties, and the value stacks up quickly for frequent travelers.
One important note: the 5th night free benefit applies when booking award stays with Marriott Bonvoy points. When you book 5 or more consecutive nights using points, the 5th night is free. Combined with a strategic use of your annual Free Night Award and our guide to Marriott 50k certificates, this card can fund some genuinely extraordinary stays for a fraction of the retail price.
