How to Hang a Wreath Without Damaging Your Door

As the seasons change I like to change out the wreath hanging on my door and I almost always use a metal wreath hanger. But this Christmas I ended up having 2 wreaths that I wanted to hang, and for the life of me, I could not find our second metal hanger anywhere in storage! So instead of leaving the house, I started to research ways to hang a wreath on a door without a metal hanger. As it turned out, I already had everything I needed so it cost me nothing! So if you’re looking for ways to hang a wreath without damaging your door, here’s my new trick on how to hang a wreath with ribbon!

How to Hang a Wreath With Ribbon

To start, make sure you have everything you’ll need.

Place Command Strip and Hook

To start you’ll need to attach the sticky strip for your hook centered at the top of your door. Be sure to read the package instructions to see how to clean the surface you’re sticking to and to see which side of the strip should be touching the door. You can measure this, but I just eye-balled it.

Then, attach your hook to the strip UPSIDE DOWN. This is the whole trick! If you’ve stuck your hook on right side up, abort mission, start over, abandon ship! These things aren’t cheap and you’ll have to start over, so just get this part right, ok?

Measure Your Ribbon

For our door I used 48″ of ribbon, but I wish I had cut a little more. So to be safe, maybe cut a little longer than you think you’ll need and trim later.

Once you’ve cut your ribbon, fold it in half to find the middle. You’ll want the middle of the ribbon to be where your wreath is resting.

Place Wreath at Eye Level on Door

Once your ribbon is fed through the wreath, open your door and drape your wreath over the front of the door while standing inside on a chair or step stool.

I had one of my kids hold the ribbon while I went outside and eyed up the position of the wreath. Once you have it where you like it, close the door to pinch the ribbon in place.

Pull the two pieces of your ribbon apart so that you can begin to tie a bow around the hook.

Tie a Bow Around Command Hook

Tie the beginning of a bow around the hook and then finish with a bow.

This is why I wished I had cut a little more than 48″. I had JUST enough to make a small bow, and it wasn’t the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. But hopefully my bow making skills aren’t what you came here for.

And even if it’s not perfect, it did its job of covering up the command hook and holding our wreath in place… and that’s what matters.

And that’s it! Now you know how to hang a wreath without a wreath hanger! I actually think I like the look of this better anyway. This method should work for almost any wreath all year long so put your spare ribbon to good use and start hanging wreaths on your front door with ribbon, yarn, twine, or whatever you think would look nice!
