How to Transfer Capital One Miles to British Airways (Step by Step)
This past weekend I spent a good chunk of Saturday raking leaves, which was NOT the most exciting thing I did. In between leaf piles, I booked one-way flights for all five of us to Madrid on Iberia for early next summer, and each ticket cost 13,333 Capital One miles plus $89.60 in taxes and fees.
If transferring points to an airline feels intimidating, I completely get it. I used to worry I’d pick the wrong partner, click the wrong button, and watch my miles disappear. So I took screenshots of every step to show you how simple it really was, start to finish.
And the best part? ONE credit card welcome offer would cover all five of our tickets, with miles left over.
The quick numbers
Here’s our receipt for five one-way tickets to Madrid:
| What | Amount |
|---|---|
| Capital One miles transferred | 67,000 |
| British Airways Avios received (with 20% bonus) | 80,400 |
| Avios per ticket (off-peak) | 16,000 |
| Capital One miles per ticket | 13,333 |
| Taxes and fees per ticket | $89.60 |
| Taxes and fees for all 5 | $448 |

Step 1: Figure out which airline can get you there
Before I ever logged into British Airways, I started with the same question every trip starts with: who actually flies where we want to go?
- Find the airlines that fly to your destination. Google Flights is the easiest way to see which airlines fly from your home airport to where you want to go. For us, Iberia flies nonstop from IAD to Madrid (IAD isn’t our home airport but it’s within driving distance so I like to check several nearby airports to find the best deals).
- Pull up your transfer partners. In your Capital One account, look at the list of airlines and hotels you can transfer miles to.
- Connect the dots. Airlines partner with each other, so you can often book one airline’s flights using a DIFFERENT airline’s miles. Iberia and British Airways are sister airlines that share the same points currency, Avios, and you can book Iberia flights right on the British Airways website. Capital One transfers to British Airways, so that became our way in. You won’t find Iberia on Capital One’s transfer list, but you WILL find British Airways, and that became our way in.
This is the step that feels like insider knowledge, but it really just comes down to knowing which airlines work together. (I explain why I booked through British Airways instead of Iberia directly a little further down.)

Step 2: Find the seats BEFORE you transfer anything
Before I moved a single mile, I logged into British Airways and searched for Iberia flights to Madrid. British Airways and Iberia are partners, so you can use British Airways Avios to book Iberia flights right on the BA website.
I kept my dates flexible and looked for off-peak days, because off-peak awards cost fewer Avios than peak dates. That flexibility is a big reason our tickets came in at just 16,000 Avios each.
Quick tip: award search tools like seats.aero are super helpful, but they don’t always catch Iberia award prices. If you don’t see what you’re looking for there, search directly on the airline’s website before you give up. That’s exactly how I found our seats.
This step matters more than any other. Once you transfer miles to an airline, you can’t move them back. Always confirm the seats you want are actually available for your whole family before you hit transfer.

Step 3: Watch for a transfer bonus
Capital One was running a 20% transfer bonus to British Airways, which meant every 1,000 Capital One miles I sent over turned into 1,200 Avios. It’s basically free extra points just for good timing.
Transfer bonuses come and go, so your math might look a little different depending on when you book. Even without a bonus, this would have been a great deal: at a regular 1:1 transfer, each ticket would have cost 16,000 Capital One miles.

Step 4: Transfer your miles
This is the part that felt scary, and it took about 10 minutes. From my Capital One account, I went to the transfer partners page, chose British Airways, entered my British Airways Club number, and transferred 67,000 miles (transfers need to be in increments of 1,000).
They landed in my British Airways account as 80,400 Avios instantly (I did need to log out of British Airways then log back in for points to reflect in my account). That’s it. That’s the scary part!
One tip: make sure the name on your British Airways account matches the name on your Capital One account, or the transfer can get held up.

Step 5: Book the flights
With the Avios in my account, I went back to the British Airways website, pulled up the same Iberia flight, and booked all five of us. The total came to 16,000 Avios plus $89.60 in taxes and fees per person.
If you have kids, double-check that every traveler’s name matches their passport exactly before you click book. It’s much easier to get right the first time than to fix later.

Why I booked with British Airways instead of Iberia
You might be wondering why I booked Iberia flights through British Airways instead of just going to Iberia directly. There are three reasons, and the first one is a BIG deal once you understand it.
1. Avios aren’t stuck in one program. Seven airline programs use Avios as their currency:
- British Airways Club
- Iberia Club
- Aer Lingus AerClub
- Qatar Airways Privilege Club
- Finnair Plus
- Vueling Club
- Loganair
You can move Avios between these programs, usually instantly and at no cost, by going to avois.com. British Airways is the hub that connects to all of them, while Qatar and Finnair only connect through British Airways. So when you see a transfer bonus to just ONE of these airlines, you’re really opening the door to booking with any of them.
2. Customer service. In my experience, British Airways customer service has been easier to work with. If something needs to change on a booking for five people, I’d much rather be dealing with them.
3. Flexibility if plans change. The cheapest Iberia award seats booked on Iberia’s own site are Basic fares, which are non-refundable. You can change the date for a penalty, but you can’t cancel and get your Avios back. Booking through British Airways, I can cancel up to 24 hours before departure and get my Avios and taxes back, minus a per-person fee (currently $55 for U.S.-based accounts). With three kids, that peace of mind is worth a lot.

This is just ONE way to use Capital One miles
British Airways worked beautifully for this trip, but it’s only one option. Earlier this summer we transferred our miles to Wyndham Rewards to book a condo in Hawaii. Capital One miles transfer to 20 airline and hotel partners, so your next trip might use a completely different airline or even a hotel stay.
You can also skip transfers altogether and use your miles to cover travel purchases you’ve already made, like a flight or hotel you paid for with your card. Here’s an example of how we did that to pay for our Disney World tickets not long ago. You’ll usually get more value from transfer partners, but it’s a simple, stress-free option when you’re just getting started.
How to start earning Capital One miles
Our entire Madrid booking for five people used 67,000 Capital One miles. That’s a number ONE welcome offer can cover entirely, especially once you add the miles you earn while meeting the minimum spend, since the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card earns 2X miles on everyday purchases.
Capital One raises the welcome offer on this card from time to time, so keep an eye out for an elevated offer before you apply. A bigger offer can be the difference between covering one ticket and covering the whole family.
Here’s the current offer, so you can see where it stands today:

Quick questions I get a lot
Do I need a British Airways account? Yes, but it’s free. Sign up for British Airways Club before you transfer so your miles have somewhere to land.
Can I book award tickets for my kids? Yes. You can book award flights for anyone in your family using your own Avios, so there’s no need for every child to have their own account.
Were these round-trip tickets? No, these were one-way flights to Madrid. Booking one-way lets you mix and match programs for the return trip to find the best deal.
What if I don’t see seats on my dates? Try nearby dates, other departure airports, and off-peak days. Use an
