How to Make Dairy Free Dalgona Coffee
I’m sure you’ve seen it all over social media. Whipped Coffee is everywhere. And if you’re fancy and in the know, you call it Dalgona Coffee. It’s apparently taking the quarantined world by storm and it’s easy to see why. As soon as I saw a gourmet looking coffee drink I could make at home, could be made dairy free, and that looked better than something I could get from the Starbucks drive-thru, I knew I needed to try it.
So even though my grocery trips are severely limited these days (I just went for the first time in 3 solid weeks!) the main ingredient of Dalgona Coffee was on my list of grocery essentials this week. Since then I’ve tried it a few times and I love it! Here’s how to make dairy free whipped coffee.
What exactly is Dalgona Coffee?
Dalgona coffee is a whipped coffee drink originating from South Korea. It is named after a nostalgic toffee flavored candy called, you guessed it, Dalgona. The drink has apparently been around for years and is popular in other parts of Asia, including India, Pakistan, and Macao.
But only recently did it become a social media craze that every house bound, coffee-loving human has been posting about on instagram.
Including me.
What are the ingredients in whipped coffee?
Whipped coffee is made of 3 simple ingredients.
- Milk
- Sugar
- Instant Coffee (I found it at Aldi but if you’re avoiding the grocery store you can add it to your Amazon order here)
How do you make Whipped Coffee?
It couldn’t be easier really.
1. Pour about a cup of milk over a glass of ice.
2. Mix together equal amounts of instant coffee, granulated sugar, and boiling water. Whisk together until color is lightened to a caramel color and stiff peaks form. (I used 2 tablespoons of each and it was the perfect amount for 2 large servings).
3. Spoon topping over milk and stir with a straw.
4. Enjoy
The Easiest Method for Making Whipped Coffee
People have said that you can whip the topping by hand with a whisk, but there’s no way I was going to stand there long enough to get “stiff peaks” to form by hand. I mean I know I have time right now, but not for this.
So after a few minutes of whisking and basically getting more exercise than I had gotten all week, I gave in and got out my hand mixer.
So. Much. Easier.
I found that about 5 minutes of mixing the topping together on high speed with a hand mixer resulted in the perfect consistency.
How to make whipped coffee dairy free
Because the milk is not part of the whipped portion of the coffee, it is very simple to make dairy free whipped coffee. Just pour your choice of milk into the glass and topped it with the fluffy whipped topping!
So far I have tried it with regular unsweetened almond milk and this Califia Farms brand of Toasted Coconut coconut almond milk. And personally, I think the Coconut milk tastes way better. It’s creamier and the toasted coconut flavor is delicious.
But go ahead and experiment with whatever milk you have on hand. I think you’ll love it!
