Why I Love the Marriott Bonvoy Business Card
If you stay at Marriott hotels even occasionally, the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card is one of the easier hotel cards to justify keeping long-term. My husband and I have both had one since 2020!
For a relatively modest annual fee, the card offers an annual 35,000 point free night certificate, automatic elite status, and bonus points in several everyday spending categories. For many travelers, that free night alone can offset the cost of the card (it does for us!).
Let’s break down what the card offers and who it’s best for.

Things To Keep In Mind When Considering This Card
- Free night certificates expire 12 months from the date they are issued. So you’ll want to have at least a general idea of how you’ll use these so they don’t go to waste!
- Some properties have resort fees so a FREE night may not be totally FREE.
- UPDATE: You can now add up to 25,000 points to these free night certificates but that does require having Marriott points either earned from spending on Marriott cards, spending one Marriott stays, or by transferring points from Chase or American Express.
- Marriott uses dynamic pricing so award prices are constantly changing. Even though dates you have selected may seem available today, that could change tomorrow.

The Annual Free Night Certificate
Every year after your card renewal, you’ll receive a Free Night Award worth up to 35,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.
Because Marriott now uses dynamic award pricing, many hotels fluctuate in price throughout the year. The good news is that you can now add up to 25,000 additional Bonvoy points to the certificate, allowing you to book rooms costing up to 60,000 points per night.
That flexibility makes the certificate far more valuable.
In many cases, this free night can easily cover a hotel that would otherwise cost $200–$300 per night, which already exceeds the card’s $125 annual fee.
Like most Marriott certificates, it expires 12 months after it’s issued, so it’s best to have a rough idea of how you plan to use it each year.
Earning Points With the Card
The card earns Marriott points across several useful spending categories:
- 6x points at Marriott Bonvoy hotels
- 4x points at restaurants worldwide
- 4x points at U.S. gas stations
- 4x points on wireless phone services and shipping purchases in the U.S.
- 2x points on everything else
These categories can make it a decent card for everyday business expenses, especially if you frequently stay at Marriott properties.
Marriott Elite Status Benefits
Cardholders automatically receive Marriott Gold Elite status.
While it’s not the highest tier in the program, it still provides a few helpful perks:
- 25% bonus points on paid Marriott stays
- Late checkout when available
- Potential room upgrades at check-in
The card also includes 15 elite night credits each year, which helps you move toward higher status levels like Platinum Elite.
A Small Perk That Adds Up: 7% Hotel Discount
Cardholders also receive a 7% discount on eligible Marriott bookings when reserving rooms through Marriott using the Amex Business Card Rate.
This won’t apply to every reservation, but if you frequently pay cash for Marriott stays, the savings can add up over time.
Can You Earn More Free Nights?
Yes — but it requires significant spending.
You can earn an additional 35,000-point free night certificate by spending $60,000 on the card in a calendar year.
For most people, that spending requirement is quite high, so the annual certificate is usually the primary long-term value of the card.
Who This Card Is Best For
The Marriott Bonvoy Business card is a great fit if you:
- Stay at Marriott hotels regularly
- Want a simple hotel card with a predictable annual perk
- Can reliably use the 35k free night certificate each year
- Have a small business or side hustle that qualifies for a business credit card (remember, it’s not as hard as you might think to qualify!)
For travelers who already stay within the Marriott ecosystem, the card can be an easy keeper year after year.
When This Card Might Not Be Worth It
This card might not be the best choice if you:
- Rarely stay at Marriott hotels
- Prefer flexible points (like transferable bank points)
- Don’t think you’ll use the free night certificate each year
Since the certificate expires after a year, the card works best for travelers who know they’ll have at least one Marriott stay annually.
Where to Use 50,000-Point Free Night Certificates
The 50,000-point Free Night Awards that come with the current Marriott credit card offer can unlock some fantastic stays, especially when you plan around off-peak pricing. Even better, Marriott allows you to add up to 25,000 additional Bonvoy points to each certificate, meaning you could potentially book hotels costing up to 75,000 points per night.
That opens the door to a wide range of great family-friendly hotels—from resorts and city properties to Disney-area hotels like the Swan and Dolphin. If you’re looking for inspiration, I put together a guide with ideas for how families can use Marriott free night certificates, including some of our favorite places to stretch these awards into memorable vacations.

Final Thoughts
The Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card isn’t the flashiest travel credit card, but it offers consistent value.
For many cardholders, the math is simple:
Pay a $125 annual fee → use the annual 35k free night certificate → receive more value than the cost of the card.
If you already stay at Marriott properties, it can be one of the easiest hotel cards to justify keeping in your wallet.
