Turn Any Gift Card Into Disney Funds

I get gift cards all the time for things like eating out or going to the movies. Sometimes I get them from rebate apps like Fetch Rewards, sometimes I redeem credit card points for gift cards, and sometimes we’ll get them as gifts for birthdays or Christmas. But what does this have to do with how to save for a Disney vacation? Tell me how to turn gift cards into Disney money!

Well, there is a strategy I’ve been using ever since we started saving for our Disney World vacation that has really given our travel budget a boost. And like most of the tips you’ll find on this blog, this strategy can be used to save for any big trip you have planned. But keep reading to find out how you can turn any gift card into savings for Disney.

So how does it work?

It’s actually really simple. And more than anything it’s a shift in your thinking that makes this strategy work.

Anytime I get a gift card, I put it towards that month’s budget for whichever category it falls into. So for example, if I get a $20 Starbucks gift card for Christmas, I put that gift card toward my monthly dining out budget instead of considering it “bonus money”. If my husband gets a $50 Home Depot card, we consider it part of our Home Improvement budget.

If you use a cash envelopes budgeting system like You Need A Budget, this is really easy. Just put the gift card in your envelope and remove the equivalent amount of cash to put into your Disney budget or your vacation budget.

If you use an electronic budgeting system like I do, you just need to transfer the funds to your vacation budget and make a point to use your gift card that month instead.

Make sense? Listen, I know it’s not rocket science, but these small shifts in the way you view your budget are what make saving for big purchases possible! Just like saying no to your nightly bowl of ice cream for several weeks in a row will get you closer to your weight loss goals. It’s the small daily choices that get you one step closer.

Baby steps my friends, baby steps.
